JetBlue’s new nonstop route between Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Ponce (PSE) makes it possible to plan a southern Puerto Rico trip without treating San Juan as the automatic gateway. Service began on July 9, 2026, and the airline announced it as a daily flight. The practical benefit is larger than one extra route: travelers can build the trip around Ponce, its historic center and the south, avoiding transfers that do not add value to the itinerary.

What changed between Fort Lauderdale and Ponce

JetBlue included Ponce among eight nonstop routes launched from Fort Lauderdale in July. In its July 9 announcement, the airline confirmed daily service between FLL and Mercedita International Airport (PSE). The same release said JetBlue was operating more than 125 daily departures to more than 55 nonstop destinations from Fort Lauderdale and expected to approach 150 daily flights during the winter.

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company separately confirmed the start of new Fort Lauderdale service to Ponce and Aguadilla. Its announcement describes the Ponce flight as part of a wider effort to improve access to the island’s south instead of concentrating every trip in metropolitan San Juan.

When Ponce can work better than San Juan

Start by pricing PSE when several of these conditions apply:

• Your first or last night will be in Ponce.

• You would rather not add a cross-island transfer simply to use the best-known airport.
• The complete FLL–PSE price, including bags and ground transportation, compares well with a San Juan itinerary.

San Juan may still be the better gateway when your lodging is concentrated there, when its total price is clearly lower after every extra is included, or when its schedule prevents an additional hotel night. Day 1: arrive and explore central Ponce

Book the first night in Ponce so the trip does not depend on a long transfer immediately after landing. For an urban stay, prioritize a location that lets you walk to restaurants and public squares.
